After moving to California ten years ago, I soon started learning about earthquake preparedness. Being German, that, of course, had to be done properly! I read and learned, and eventually also attended the LAFD CERT course, to become a Community Emergency Response Team member.
In doing all that, it always struck me that while there is a lot of information out there, it is also such a lot of information that it can become overwhelming.
Not to mention that in researching, one is only one step away from the dark realm of the hardcore preppers, the ones preparing for WSHTF (When S…omething HITS THE FAN) and TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It). Self-reliance and survivalism may be fine for some, but in the vast majority of cases and for most of us being prepared is about getting through a disaster until society bounced back and normal services resume.
What I could have done with was someone to curate all that information, someone to help me figure out what I really needed. Someone who didn’t just quickly sell me a lot of low-quality gear in a cheap bag that wouldn’t get me far and wouldn’t even last the 72 hours recommended by FEMA, let alone the 7 days I really should have stocked up for.
There are many checklists, booklets, websites, and so on. But for something as important as preparing for a potentially terrifying event that has the potential to, at the very least, disrupt your life it in a big way, there was no way to get it done without spending endless confusing and frustrating hours of research, shopping, packing, and securing furniture and appliances.
So I decided I should try to become that person for others. Which meant doing even more research to be able to cover all sorts of people, families, and situations. The more I looked, the more I learned, the more frustrated I got by what was not being offered, and the more determined I became to be able to provide the kind of service that puts your mind at ease.
So, here I am … I hope what you read on this website makes sense, and that you let me come to your home and walk and talk you through it all, step by manageable step.
